PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS WITH OPTIONS TO INTERACT :
w PIERRE THE PELICAN NEWSLETTER begins when an infant is born in Pennock Hospital and if the parents wish to subscribe it provides them with developmental expectations and milestones for their child. They receive the free publication periodically from birth up to the child’s 6th birthday. Volunteers are needed to help with maintaining a mailing list and coordinate the pre-prepared newsletter for monthly distribution. Some of the preparation can be done in or outside of the Council office. It takes approximately 10-11 hours per month to prepare the mailing & update the addresses. A Board Member would be able to coordinate the volunteer(s) for this mailing project and keep current all materials needed and collect the “cards” from the hospital.
w BABY BASICS PROGRAM is available to 8th grade students in Barry County which began in the fall of 2003 and provides an educational opportunity to learn the realities of caring for babies and especially the dangers of shaking an infant or young child. Training is necessary and is provided along with the “kit.” Presentations are 40-60 minutes long and scheduled with the Schools. Volunteers or Board Members can be trained to give classroom presentations in the Schools. A volunteer is needed to communicate and coordinate the scheduling of schools.
w CRIB RESOURCE IN BARRY (C.R.I.B.) PROGRAM is available to families who are in financial need of a safe sleeping environment for their child. A Crib, mattress, 2 fitted sheets, a CAPCBC canvas tote with educational materials and a personal crib quilt are available by a referring agent filling out a referral form and submitting it to the Council. Approximately 4-6 hours a month are needed. Volunteers can help with distribution and with maintaining a current supply of resources.
w PREVENT SHAKEN BABY SYNDROME INFORMATION is available in the Pennock Baby Bag given to parents of newborns in Pennock Hospital. We provide “Crying…What Can I Do Instead?” Card, “What to Expect the 1st Year” book, and the “Family Resource Guide for Barry County”. Parents also view the “Crying…What Should I Do Instead?” video before they are discharged. A Volunteer is needed to communicate with the Hospital to maintain a current supply of cards and books.
w PARENTING EDUCATION CALENDAR (PEC) and NEWSLETTER is a collaboration of Barry County wide parenting opportunities, classes, support groups and family agencies. The P.E.C. is mailed every 3 months to individuals who request it. Requesting updated information and coordinating the calendar takes about 10-11 hours per quarter and 10-11 hours per quarter to coordinate and develop the newsletter. One or two volunteers are needed to coordinate information to be collected and developed into the PEC & Newsletter and assist in the mailing each quarter.
w BABY THINK IT OVER DOLL is a computerized doll used during pre-parenting classes, baby-sitter training and with agencies that work with at risk families. The computer records when the doll cries, how often it cries, if it was abused and how often it was attended. It is available to borrow and enables a “hands on” experience in caring for an infant. A volunteer is needed to coordinate promotion and training of individuals to use this program.
w KIDWISE COLUMN is published once a month in the Reminder newspaper and provides parents and families with helpful hints on structuring after-school time, holiday stress, disciplining, shopping with kids, home safety and elsewhere, health issues, etc. Approximately 5-6 hours volunteer time per month. A volunteer is needed to create suggestions and use computer skills to help in developing this informational column.
w “ON THE JOB TRAINING MANUAL FOR PARENTS” was developed by the Council to offer information on pertinent health, developmental and safety topics in a simple format for parents of infants through children 5 years of age. Distribution takes about 4 hours per month. A volunteer can assist in the distribution and promotion of this program.
w LIBRARY PLACEMENT PROGRAM makes available to all parents and professionals information on A.D.D., A.D.H.D., listening skills, dealing with kids and divorce, helping kids fit in, preventing abuse and neglect and many more topics, Information is in book, cassette or video format in each of the Barry County Public Libraries. Board Members can promote use of this program, help place the materials after they are ordered, and suggest titles that might meet the needs of parents.
w FAMILY RESOURCE GUIDE FOR BARRY COUNTY is a pocket tri-fold card that makes available over 70 phone numbers of agencies and services in Barry County that offer assistance to families and that can service a variety of needs. Distribution takes 4-6 hours per month. Promotion and distribution by Board Members, volunteers and agencies make this program a continued success.
w SEXUAL ABUSE KIDS EDUCATION (S.A.K.E.) PROGRAM works with Elementary School Counselors to provide educational information to 1st and 3rd graders in Barry County Schools to help them understand “good touch, bad touch” and ways to seek help if they find themselves in an uncomfortable situation. Coordination with school administrators and teachers is needed and volunteer help to promote the increased use of this very valuable program.
w BARRY COUNTY MANDATED REPORTER MANUAL has been developed and support presentations are organized to help those persons in the community (ie. Health workers, emergency personnel, physicians, educational staff, clergy, etc.) who are identified as Mandated Reporters to better understand their role and the responsibility of making a report. Trained volunteers can help to promote and provide training to those who are mandated reporters in our community.
w FAMILY WORKSHOP SERIES is free to parents and includes dinner and child-care in the communities of Middleville, Hastings, Delton and Nashville. January through April Parenting subjects are presented by panels of three experts on topics such as bullying, discipline, emotional issues and other topics we have had parents suggest. Volunteers are needed on the committee to promote the classes, conduct presentations, help with child-care activities and suggest future topics of interest.
w COMMUNITY BREAKFAST collaboration with CAPCBC, CASA, Building Strong Families, Kinship Care and Foster Home Recruiter to bring awareness to the general public as well as human services, judicial and politicians to the issues of child abuse and neglect in Barry County through a free breakfast and speakers on pertinent topics. Board members and volunteer Committee Members are needed to promote the breakfasts, suggest speakers or topics and organize the planning and preparation of the mailing or meal September through June. Approximately 4 volunteer hours a month.
w Board Members and volunteers are needed in writing for grants, to man information booths or help with fund-raisers. Activities such as answering phone, handing out candy or toothbrushes and promoting and supporting the golf outing, general office work or creative computer-work.
